Taxes

In principle, all people living in Japan must pay taxes, regardless of nationality.

Income tax

Income tax is a tax levied on individuals on income earned between January 1st and December 31st of that year and paid to the government. For salaried people (salaried workers), income tax is deducted from their monthly pay in accordance with the law by their employer, and the employer pays the tax to a national agency on their behalf. Of these people, those who have their "year-end tax adjustment" performed by their employer in December have already had their income tax settled, but other people and self-employed people must file a tax return with the tax office between February 16th and March 15th of the following year and pay their income tax.

Resident tax (city/prefectural tax)

Anyone who has an address in Japan on January 1st is required to pay resident tax.
Resident tax is calculated based on the previous year's income, so you will not receive a tax notice in the year you arrive in Japan, but you will be notified of resident tax the following year.
If you are a salaried worker, local resident tax is usually deducted from your salary every month from June to May of the following year.
If you are a salaried employee, then the Residential Tax will be withheld from your salary each month from June until May of the following year.
Other people will pay using the payment slip sent by the city.

★Note
If you are subject to resident tax and are leaving the country, you must pay the remaining tax amount before leaving.

Light vehicle tax

This tax is levied on people who own light vehicles, mopeds, small two-wheeled vehicles, etc. as of April 1st of each year.

Fixed asset tax and city planning tax

This tax is levied on people who own land, buildings, and depreciable assets (business assets) as of January 1st of each year.
